Oh la la! Our next Album of the Month Club on Tuesday October 24th will feature Air Moon Safari. French duo Air’s debut album united synth-based electronica, kick-back loungey vibes and cinematic scores and became a hit.
Air’s Moon Safari is a seminal masterpiece that redefined the electronic music landscape. Released in 1998, this French duo, comprised of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, crafted an ethereal sonic journey that seamlessly fused downtempo, ambient, and pop elements. The album’s creation was a meticulous process, blending vintage analog synthesizers with lush orchestration, creating a dreamy and cinematic sonic atmosphere.
Culturally, Moon Safari had a profound impact. It epitomized the late 90s’ chill-out movement, introducing a new era of electronic music characterized by its elegance and accessibility. Tracks like “Sexy Boy” and “La Femme d’Argent” became anthems of a generation, soundtracking everything from fashion runways to films. Its enduring influence continues to inspire contemporary electronic artists, making Moon Safari a timeless and essential work of art.
In advance of the meeting, Colleen will send out a ‘Musical Lead-Up Playlist’ of 10 songs – music that will set the tone for the deep album listening featuring Pink Floyd’s inspirations and other bands in their milieu at that time.
At the meeting, itself, Colleen tells the story behind the album for about 20 minutes and then we listen to the album in its entirety without interruption following our listening guidelines – phones off and no talking. After the album finishes we reconvene and have a discussion about the album and our listening experience.
