A lot has changed since John Coltrane produced the epic and transcendent jazz hues pressed into A Love Supreme. First, the jazz scene isn’t what it used to be- jazz icons of Coltrane’s time were praised universally and were big stars. Today, it takes a little more research to discover the genre’s modern talents, but Kamasi Washington, Ravi Coltrane (yes, his son), Matana Roberts, and Colin Stetson make the search worthwhile.

The second half of this playlist is composed of hip-hop artists who use these brass aficionados for the backbone of their tracks. A Tribe Called Quest made the most significant impact on the style with The Low-End Theory, and Digable Planets and Guru match their enthusiasm with some slick and smooth grooves.
