The Smiths are one of Manchester’s seminal acts and although ‘Meat is Murder’ is not considered their definitive work (that accolade most likely would go to ‘The Queen is Dead’), their second album still deserves attention as it was the album that encapsulated the kernel of their future sound both lyrically and musically. Morrissey was beginning to write more politically and socially conscious lyrics and guitarist Johnny Marr and bass player Andy Rourke were getting the rockabilly bug. The US edition also included the song ‘How Soon is Now’ which showed the band crossing over into dance music. Classic Album Sundays pays tribute by celebrating the 30th anniversary of this classic LP. Read more about the album here.
