For the second part of our ‘free’ weekend in Oslo we finally have the chance to highlight one of jazz history’s most characterful voices, “The High Priestess of Soul” Nina Simone.
“Black Gold”, released on RCA Victor, 1970, reproduces footage from the concert Simone held at Philharmonic Hall in New York, a poignant album where she will fully demonstrated the unique mediation power she possessed.
When she combines her technical vocal strength, its passionate, vulnerable honest, almost androgynous baritone and the virtuoso, classically trained piano skills she developed from a young age, with melankole and encouraging message for their African American brothers and sisters, as in “To Be Young, Gifted and Black”.
“It is not addressed to white people Primarily. Though it does not put you down in any way … it simply ignores you. For my people need all the inspiration and love that they can get.”
