We are delighted to be part of The Royal Albert Hall’s Summer of Love: Revisited programme, a series of talks, screenings and performances in the Elgar Room celebrating this pivotal moment of cultural history.
Classic Album Sundays will be hosting four amazing events each exploring a different part of the sixties counterculture movements.
For our first event we will be joined by the incredible Laura Mvula as we take a look at The Women of 60s Soul.
Classic Album Sundays with special guest Laura Mvula on the Revolutionary Women of Sixties Soul
Classic Album Sundays’ Colleen Murphy and Laura Mvula will discuss how female soul, jazz and rock musicians broke down social and cultural barriers, their challenges and their victories. Music from these revolutionary artists will be played on vinyl on the CAS audiophile hi-fi featuring Audio Note UK and Klipschorns.
Featured artists: Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield, The Supremes and Dionne Warwick.
Vocalist, songwriter and composer Laura Mvula gained recognition for her critically acclaimed studio albums Sing to the Moon (2013) and The Dreaming Room (2016). A Birmingham Conservatoire alumni, double Mercury Prize nominee Mvula is one of the most exciting musical talents to come out of the UK in recent years. Her striking vocals and unpredictable compositions have drawn comparisons to Nina Simone and Prince. As an international touring artist Laura has been selling out concerts and captivating audiences from Glastonbury Pyramid Stage to the David Letterman Show to the BBC Proms.
