Classic Album Sundays London presents Dave Brubeck ‘Time Out’ with Darius Brubeck For London Jazz Festival

A subtle blend of cool and West Coast jazz, Dave Brubeck’s 1959 album went platinum – and included a similarly massive single hit with Take Five. Brubeck’s son Darius fills in the background to an album that changed jazz perceptions, exploring unconventional time signatures and themes suggested by the Quartet’s tour of Europe and Asia the previous year. Classic Album Sundays tells the stories behind the albums that have shaped our culture and in some cases, our lives. We are the world’s most popular and respected classic album listening event with satellites in four continents and our website and social media channels are the hub for classic albums and artists.

Classic Album Sundays London presents The Joe Harriott Quintet ‘Abstract’ with Soweto Kinch For London Jazz Festival

Jamaican saxophonist Joe Harriott arrived in the UK in 1951 and swiftly became established as a fluent bebop soloist. By the end of the 50s, he was moving into much more open musical territory, creating an approach to improvisation that was both rhythmically and melodically free, and with a band that included the St. Lucian trumpeter and writer Shake Keane and the great British drummer Phil Seamen. His 1962 album Abstract, introduced by saxophonist and broadcaster Soweto Kinch, marks a milestone in British jazz, creating an ever-shifting soundscape that proved distinctively different distinct from parallel experiments in free jazz in the USA – and , even garnering a five start review in the American magazine Downbeat. Part of Kings Place’s Time Unwrapped year, as well as The EFG London jazz Festival’s Windrush season.
