After two sold out events with Ned Doheny and The Blackbyrds’ Keith Killgo, Classic Album Sundays and founder Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy return to the KEF Music Gallery on Wednesday, the 20th November to explore a pioneering synth-pop classic: ‘Penthouse and Pavement’ by Heaven 17. Colleen will be joined by founding Heaven 17 member Martyn Ware to explore the group’s debut album released in 1981. Tickets are free but reservations are limited.
Both Ware and fellow bandmember Ian Craig Marsh were founding members of Human League but left the Sheffield outfit to form Heaven 17 along with singer Glenn Gregory and they debuted with the single ‘(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’ which was banned by the BBC due to fears of libel against then US president Ronald Reagan. Whilst their singles did not chart at the time, Heaven 17 were beloved as an album band and Penthouse and Pavement reached number 14 and stayed on the UK Album Charts for 77 weeks.
After the interview Penthouse and Pavement will be played in its entirety on vinyl on an audiophile sound system featuring KEF loudspeakers so that listeners can hear new details and nuances in the recording. The evening will conclude with a Q&A during which attendees will have the opportunity to ask Ware their own questions. Join us to experience Penthouse and Pavement in a way you never have before.
Doors open at 6:30 pm and the event starts at 7pm and runs through to 9pm. Tickets are free but they are limited! Secure your reservation here.
And please make a note in your diaries for the next events in the series:
11 December: Classic Album Sundays presents Dorothy Ashby ‘Afro-Harping’ with soul harpist Alina Bzhezhinska.
Tickets will be released the day after the preceding event.
Thanks for listening!
